Event: cycle picnic

This term we will be working on the cyclists badge and thought it would be a nice idea to put what we’ve learned into practice by having a family cycle picnic.

Weather latest: Following the overnight storms and taking account of Met Office warnings of more developing during the day we have reluctantly decided to cancel this event.

When: Our picnic will take place on Saturday 19 July, starting at 10:30

Where: We thought it best to avoid roads so we plan to use the Downs Link bridleway between Southwater and Henfield.

What: We’ll cycle along the Downs Link stopping to look at places of interest and for breaks as necessary. We expect the group to stay together. We’ve arranged to stop at the Cat and Canary pub in Henfield for lunch (Cubs taking their own) and at the information carriage at West Grinstead on our return journey.

We’ll be doing the whole return trip but on the reply form you can select from three options:

  1. The full trip – Southwater Country Park to Henfield and return.
This is approximately a 14 mile round trip (about 90 minutes cycling each way, 3 hours cycling in total but with breaks). We’ll start from Southwater and head for Henfield, only stopping for drink or nature breaks. This includes a short road section in Partridge Green which we would walk. Our turning point in Henfield will be the Cat and Canary pub where we will stop to have lunch. On the way back we will stop to look at West Grinstead station where the West Sussex rangers have made special arrangements for the information carriage to be opened for us.
  2. The West Grinstead option.
You’ll come with us to Henfield and stop for lunch. On the way back we’ll stop to look at West Grinstead station where you’ll be collected. This is approximately a 11.5 mile round trip (about 90 minutes to Henfield and then an hour on the way back).
  3. The one way option.
You’ll come with us to Henfield where you will be collected. This is approximately a 7 mile trip (about 90 minutes of cycling).

Timetable: We’ll confirm details in our joining instructions. Timings are expected to be as follows:

  • 10:30 – meet on the Downs Link at Southwater. Pre-trip briefing
  • 11:00 – depart Southwater. Just drinks breaks and nature stops on this leg
  • 12:30 – arrive Henfield for lunch (or to be picked up if only cycling one way)
  • 13:15 – depart Henfield making necessary drink and nature stops en route
  • 14:15 – arrive West Grinstead station. Stop to see the information carriage or be collected if doing that option
  • 14:45 – depart West Grinstead
  • 15:15 – arrive Southwater

Parking: We’ve done a practice trip and found that the car park at Southwater Country Park can be very busy. Both it and West Grinstead have 2m height barriers so please bear that in mind if your bike is on a roof rack. We plan to use the overflow parking in Ben’s field which is on the other side of Cripplegate Lane. Full information will be in the joining instructions.

Your bike: Although we’ll be teaching the Cubs how to do the “M” check on their bikes we won’t actually be checking the bikes themselves. It is up to you to ensure that you have a bike that is capable of the journey ahead and that your Cub is a competent cyclist. Although any bike can use the Downs Link, its rough surface is more suited to those with wider tyres.

Cost: This is a family event and has no charge.

Who: This event is open to all our Cubs who have bikes and are capable of cycling the distance. We’d be pleased to be joined by other family members or friends but do remember that we are only responsible for the Cubs. Other children must be accompanied by an adult who can look after them. Let is know your numbers and which option you plan to do by completing our reply form.

We currently have just 4 Cubs on our guest list: Holly, Lauren, Tom and Lily

Wear: You should wear clothes that are suited to the weather on the day. This may include a lightweight waterproof which can also be handy at keeping the wind out if it is a breezy day. All Cubs should wear their group scarves and note that it is a requirement that all Scouts involved in cycling events wear a cycle helmet. You may also like to bring sunglasses and cycle gloves if you have them. We will not be cycling on the road and so extra high visibility gear is not required. (We’ll walk on the path through the section at Partridge Green where the Downs Link uses the road).

Bring: You should bring a water bottle that you can drink from during the journey. You’ll also need a packed lunch and drink unless your party plans to buy lunch at the pub. We hope that it will be a sunny day in which case sun cream is also required.

Paperwork: Reserve your place now using the online reply form. If you are on our guest list please complete our online health form so that we have up to date contact information for the trip.
