Report: Summer Camp 2015

For Summer Camp 2015 we returned to Bentley Copse Scout Campsite near Cranleigh.

Our theme was the Commonwealth so the Cubs each researched a country to tell us about. It also gave us the opportunity to stage the Commonwealth Games which counted towards the Athlete badge. There was plenty of time for the usual camp fires, wide games and on site activities too including climbing, rifle shooting and go karting during the week. We went off site on Tuesday for our hike to Pitch Hill. It was a level 3 camp as we slept in tents.

This year we started on the afternoon of Sunday 16 August and ran through until lunchtime on Saturday 22 August although our mini-campers went home (in the rain) on Wednesday 19 August. It was nice to have enough campers to allow us to stay for the whole week.

Our guest list was:

  • Full week (8+3): Olivia, Grace, Lily, Kinley, Charlie, Henry, Jake and William plus Aaron, Hannon and Holly (Scouts)
  • Mini camp (5): Aiden, Craig, Katie, Theo and Ethan.
  • Helpers camping – Tabaqui
  • Adults camping – Jacala, Marian, Hathi, Kaa

We were pleased to be joined by Kaa (Alex) on this camp. As an ex-2nd Bracknell Scout and former Cub of Jacala’s it was the first time he’d camped with us. We’re also grateful to the day visitors that came to help out – Lara, John, Phoenix, Tracy and Mike.

Despite a dodgy phone signal and failing mobile phone batteries we managed to post some pictures from site on our Instagram feed during camp.

Summer Camp gallery

Thanks to Jacala for providing the photos

Where: We will be camping on the Sherman Field at Bentley Copse Camp Site near Cranleigh. We’re on the centre of the field behind the flag pole.

Directions: You will need to make your own way to and from the site. You may like to follow our directions. The journey from Billingshurst should take you about 30 minutes. Whichever way you come you will end up on the narrow lanes so please drive carefully. Keep a look out for the site on the right as you head downhill on Hound House Road. Do not rely on your satnav as the camp site warns us that it is likely to take you past the site.

When: Camp starts on Sunday 16 August.

  • 1pm – meet at the hall to help load the van. We’d be grateful for help with transporting the kit. If you can fit anything in your car then it will ease the weight in the van – just bring it along when you drop off your Cub.
  • 2pm – site booking starts at Bentley Copse. We have a lot of tents to put up so would welcome additional adult helpers
  • 4pm – if you are not putting up tents then please do not arrive until 4pm as we will not be ready for you.

Camp will run through until Saturday 22 August when we close at 11.30am. Mini campers leave on Wednesday 19 August after presentations at 5.15pm.

Helpers: We’re grateful to Lara and Tracy for coming to join us at camp for the day on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you are free on Tuesday and would like to join our hike, or can come along to help in the kitchen on Friday please let Jacala know – we do need to know in advance. We’d also like some extra help taking things down on Saturday – please come along from 10am.

Campers: The final guest list is:
Full week (8+3): Olivia, Grace, Lily, Kinley, Charlie, Henry, Jake, William and Lucas plus Aaron, Hannon and Holly (Scouts).
Mini camp (5): Aiden, Craig, Katie, Theo and Ethan.
Check our Summer Camp tracker to make sure we have received your forms and payments.

Cost: Camp fees are £70 for the mini camp and £130 for the full week. All fees are now paid – thank you.

Paperwork: All in – thank you.

Homework: Each of our Cubs needs to research information about a country in the Commonwealth. We’ve allocated the countries based on our Caribbean or Oceania teams. (The Scouts that are camping with us have also got countries but do not need to research them – just know about their flag.)
For your country you should find out where it is (a map of the country and a map of the world), name of the capital city, what language is spoken, surface area, population, currency and internet TLD (top level domain – e.g. .uk for the United Kingdom, .fr for France). Once you get to camp we’ll be asking you to make a flag for your country so make sure you know what it looks like but no need to make one in advance.

Bring: The kit list has been updated and shows all that you need to bring. Please check it carefully as there are some items that are not usually required – such as for our hike on Tuesday and cakes for the kitchen. The weather still looks uncertain so make sure you have packed waterproofs, welly boots for the wet grass in the mornings and warm clothes for the cool evenings in addition to your sun hat and sun cream. Don’t forget to bring your homework.

Event: Summer camp

Summer Camp is our main camp of the year – a chance to get away for more than just a weekend. It will be a level 3 camp as we will be sleeping in tents. This year our theme is the Commonwealth so we’ll be taking a trip round the world, exploring new countries and of course staging our own Commonwealth Games – all without leaving the campsite in Surrey.

We had been concerned about low numbers but thanks to a last minute surge we can now confirm that camp will run for the full week as planned.

What to do now: We just have a couple of health forms and balance payments outstanding. Don’t forget to research your country – we’ve e-mailed out that list

Where: We will be camping on the Sherman Field at Bentley Copse Camp Site near Cranleigh.

Directions: You will need to make your own way to and from the site. You may like to follow our directions. Whichever way you come you will end up on the narrow lanes so please drive carefully. Do not rely on satnav as the camp site warns us that the postcode will take you to the wrong address.

When: We start at lunchtime on Sunday 16 August so that those that come back from holiday on Saturday can still join us. Camp will run through until lunchtime on Saturday 22 August. As usual we hope that you’ll want to join us for the full camp but we also offer a Sunday to Wednesday 3 night mini-camp option too.

What: This year our theme is the Commonwealth so we’ll be taking a trip round the world, exploring new countries and of course staging our own Commonwealth Games – all without leaving the campsite in Surrey. We plan to make the most of the activities available on site and will include wall climbing, rifle shooting and the assault course in the first half of the week. There will also be a hike up Pitch Hill. Those staying for the full week will also get the chance to take part in activities including archery and go karting. We’ll also have plenty of time for games on the field and a few other challenges on the way plus our evening camp fires.

Who: Camp has been open to all our invested members but the guest list is now closed.
We’ll also need some extra adults to help out. This doesn’t have to mean camping as we need to transport all the gear and will need help pitching the tents. If you would like to stay with us we will also need help in the kitchen with Marian and Hathi, you could help Jacala and Tabaqui run the activities or just come with us on our picnic hike. There is always plenty to do so please ask for more information if you are interested.
The final guest list is:
Full week (8+3): Olivia, Grace, Lily, Kinley, Charlie, Henry, Jake, William and Lucas plus Aaron, Hannon and Holly (Scouts).
Mini camp (5): Aiden, Craig, Katie, Theo and Ethan.

Cost: As usual we are using our Parbrook Cashback to keep down the costs that you have to pay. Sadly the costs of activites and camp fees go up every year which makes it harder to keep down costs. We’re subsidising the camp fees by around £25 for mini-campers and £40 for full campers thanks to the money you have raised for us via Easyfundraising. This means that the camp fees are £70 for the mini camp and £130 for the full week. You can reserve your place with a deposit of £19 for the mini camp and £27 for the full camp.

Paperwork: As usual we need a completed online health from all our campers.

Bring: The kit list shows all that you need to bring. There is nothing particularly unusual required for this camp. There will be some pre-camp research to find out more about a Commonwealth country but we’ll tell you more about that nearer the time.
