Points competition – November 2018

At the end of October it was once again the Yellows who were our best six. Points this month include those earned at Remembrance Sunday.

Despite our best efforts to level up the numbers in each six the poor old Reds have suffered from some unexpected departures and now only have 4 members. With most of the points this month coming from inspection and attendance this hits them hard, knocking them into third place. With our reduced numbers we sadly closed Green six this month.

Our Cub of the Month was James who made this his second consecutive month by completing some challenge badges at home.

Report: Remembrance 2018

At 1st Billingshurst we are proud of our links with the Royal British Legion and were pleased to be part of the village Remembrance Sunday parade on Sunday 11 November.

We selected Cubs to do the following jobs:

  • Colour bearer (to carry our flag). Our eldest Cub: Tommy
  • Colour party (2 Cubs to escort our flag on the parade): Tyler and Evan
  • Wreath bearer (to lay our wreath at the war memorial). Our Cub of the month for October: James

After an unhelpful but thankfully brief shower just before most Cubs arrived it was a lovely sunny day for a parade and everybody looked very smart as we marched through the village.

After the wreath laying service at the war memorial we would normally go in to the church for the main service. However, an unfortunate person tripped in the church and had to wait for an ambulance. As a result we regrouped back at the memorial for the main service. Although we tried hard it is a lot more tricky to sing the hymns with no accompaniment. With no flags to be presented we zoomed through the service and so set off for the final leg of the parade rather earlier than usual, arriving at the Village Hall about 20 minutes early. This turned out to be a good thing as while people were inside getting a cup of tea the heavens opened.

On Tuesday 13 November we used our pack meeting to help out the British Legion by opening the collection pots from around the village. The money inside had to be counted, bagged and most importantly noted down so that the people knew how much they had collected. It was a busy evening with everybody involved and a great turnout of extra adults too. At the end of the evening the Cubs reported that some of the pots had contained more than £200 with one of them having more than £260 inside.

We do this every year so can compare the totals that we counted.

Points competition – October 2018

In October the competition between Yellows and Blues continued but this time the Yellows ended up in the lead.

Our Cub of the Month was James who was one of three Cubs who became a Sixer or Seconder in the month. On top of his regular attendance and good inspection points this earned him +25 points which pushed him into the lead.

Sadly October is the last month that the Greens will be taking part in the competition. With falling numbers ahead of the change of leaders at Christmas we have closed down the Greens and just have three sixes now.

Report: Summer Camp 2018

For Summer Camp 2018 we returned to Downe Scout Activity Centre at Biggin Hill in Kent. After the long hot summer we didn’t have a completely dry week but still did well with the weather

Camp ran from Sunday 12 to Saturday 18 August with our mini-campers leaving us on the Wednesday. It was a level 3 camp as we slept in tents.

With Charles Darwin having lived nearby we found out about him and his life and also visited his house during the week.

Our guest list was:

  • Full week (9): Lucybelle, Thomas, Adam, Martha, Violet, Izzy, Jasmine, Joshua
  • Mini camp (3): James, Tommy and Luke
  • Adults camping (5) – Jacala, Marian, Kaa, Tabaqui, Helen and Luke (scout helper)

Report: Pack meeting – RepTylers

Our pack meeting on 16 October 2018 was a bit different as we were visited by the RepTylers from Brighton and their collection.

During the evening we met snakes, spiders and lizards. The Cubs got the chance to hold or touch the creatures – in some cases having to overcome their fears to do so. We even got Akela to hold the tarantula.

As you will see from the pictures, Cubs is not just kids stuff – we’re always pleased to have more helpers so do ask if you would like to get involved next time.
