Autumn term update

As usual we have a lot going so here are some updates

October pack meetings

  • There will be no Cubs on 24 October. Although we normally meet in Half Term we are giving it a miss this year. With the current forecast it will probably be wet and windy anyway so maybe not the best time to go to the woods.
  • Our planned visit to Pets at Home that was due to take place on 31 October has been postponed until the new year. We needed additional adult helpers to make up for a number of leaders that were unavailable but sadly only one parent came forward. We won’t be meeting at all that week

Help wanted
There have been a number of evenings this term where we have identified that we need additional adults. We had hoped that by just targetting the weeks where help is most needed and making it easy to sign up using My Scout we would get the helpers that we needed. At the moment we still have gaps for the poppy cash counting evening on 14 November. Don’t leave it to the usual faces – just pop along to My Scout, click on the programme tab and click on the red “I can help” button to sign up.

Home safety badge
Last week we did most of the work required to complete the home safety badge. We sent everybody home with a “useful numbers” form that needs to be completed and returned to us. We have already had a number returned so well done if that includes yours.

Parbrook numbers
Last week we invested 4 new members who all did very well saying their Law and Promise. This has now taken our numbers above 30 and very close to our maximum number which is 32. Although we lose two of our eldest members in December we have another 2 Beavers to come up after half term and more after Christmas. As you’ll have noticed, the hall seems very full and it can get quite noisy. We are fortunate this term to have our three young leaders who have each been managing one of the sixes. However, with 2 of them on D of E work it is likely that we will lose them after Chistmas. This leaves us in a difficult position.
We have decided that until Easter 2018 we will restrict new joiners to just those Beavers that we have already offered a place (because they have a brother or sister already with us). All other Beavers and any new starters will be directed to the Wednesday night Dauxwood pack as they currently have about 15 members.

Activities to do at home
With us about to have a 2 week break from Cubs there are still things that you can do at home.

Other reminders
We still have a few Subs outstanding for the Autumn Term. Those that were invested last week only need to pay us a half term but for everybody else the full £35 is due. Remember to pay us via online banking – our bank details can be found in the “notices” tab of “My Scout”.
We now have 16 Cubs on the list for our night at the museum and then activity day at the hall on 1 & 2 December. We have to confirm final numbers to the museum shortly so if you are still thinking about coming please get your reply in quickly. Again the booking can be made on “My Scout” and everybody who has not yet confirmed will have had an automated chaser message with a link to the event which was sent out on 14 October.

Group fundraising

There are a number of fundraising events that are coming up to raise money for Billinsghurst Scout and Guide group funds

Billingshurst Fireworks – Saturday 21 October
The group will again be doing the teas at the fireworks. Fortunately they are fully staffed with Guide parents but donations of cakes to sell on the night would still be welcome. These can either be delivered to Sally MacPherson or to our GSL, Zoe Jenkins, at the hall on Friday evening during the Downlands Scout meeting (6.30pm to 8pm)

Bag packing at Tesco – Saturday 18 November
The Scouts and Guides will be bag packing at Tesco in Pulborough all day on 18 November. Although no Parbrook leaders are available, Cubs are welcome to join Dauxwood Cubs between 1300 and 1500 although there will be leaders there throughout the day. Cubs should be in uniform.

Billifest – Saturday 2 December
The weekend of our night at the museum camp sees the Billifest taking place in the High Street and Jengers Mead. The group is again running the refreshment stall. While this is under the watchful eye of Helen Pullen, she has asked for additional helpers to drop in and give her a break from time to time. In addition to selling refreshments the Billifest is also a useful showcase for the group and we hope that we might even find a few new leaders at the same time.

Monthly fun draw
The Group Exec is again running its monthly fun draw as a fundraiser for Scouts and Guides. Subscriptions of £10 per number must be paid by 22 October so that the first draw can take place at the Exec meeting at the end of the month. Used postage stamps
The Guides continue to collect used postage stamps. There is a box in the kitchen where you can leave your donations.

Welcome back to the Autumn Term

Hello everyone and welcome back after the half term break.

So as the big countdown to Christmas begins, we’ve got lots to tell you and so here’s some important information for the coming weeks ahead.

Christmas Activities
A bit of a strange one but can all of our cubs please bring in the cardboard tubes from 4 toilet rolls please. We don’t need them until Nov 22nd when our christmas activities begin and they make great Christmas crackers!

Remembrance Sunday parade
On 13 November we’ll be joining the rest of the group in the British Legion’s Remembrance Sunday parade and service. We hope that all our Cubs will be able to attend this important village event. We’ve sent you a message from OSM so that you can let us know if you can come. All the details that we have about the parade are on the website.

On the following Tuesday, 15 November, we’ll be helping the British Legion by opening the poppy collection boxes and counting the money. It is always a very busy evening and so we’d welcome a few extra adults to help supervise.

Group bag packing
On Saturday 19 November the group will be bag packing at Pulborough Tesco. We’ve not been given any particular slot so if you are available please come along for an hour or so. We expect to have more details nearer the time.

Christmas Fayre
On Saturday 26 November the group is holding its Christmas Fayre in the hall from 10-12. In preparation for this we are sending each Cub home with some raffle tickets this week. We hope that you will be able to sell them. Please return counterfoils, money and any unsold tickets to us by Tuesday 22 November at the latest.

District Promise Party
The Cubs centenary year is drawing to a close but there is still one national event left. Cubs was started on 16 December 1916 and so the District is holding a Promise Party on 16 December. We’ll be meeting Cubs from all the groups for a fun packed evening at Rother College, Midhurst. All the details are online at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2 016/10/29/event-promise-party/. At 19:16 (7:16pm) all Cubs across the UK will re-make their Promise but there will also be camp fire songs and hopefully birthday cake. You can register on OSM if you’d like to come – either reply to the e-mail we sent or log onto your My Scout account and find the Promise Party under “events”.

Put your stamp on Christmas
The group is again running its stamp design competition for the Christmas Post service. There will be 4 stamp designs and one will be from designs submitted by the Cubs and Brownies. We don’t have long for you to come up with a design as they must be in to us by Tuesday 15 November. Stamps will be on sale at the Christmas Fayre and the Billifest and first day covers will be available.

We know that we have some good artists amongst the Cubs so would like to get one of our stamps into the selection this year as it is Cubs centenary. It has been several years since a Parbrook design has been chosen so we hope that you can come up with some good ones for the judges to pick. Subs
Thanks to everybody for paying your subs by half term. It is a great relief for us to have the money in without having to do too much chasing. We’re trying to move to online payments to avoid having cash or cheques lying around that have to then be taken to the bank. We’re grateful to everybody that already pays us this way.

Painless fundraising
While the group sticks to its traditional methods of fundraising, e.g. raffle tickets, we’re grateful to those that support our painless fundraising when you shop online. For just a few extra clicks you can earn us money on your purchase. It doesn’t cost you any extra but has already earned us £295 this year. This money stays with Parbrook Cubs and can be used to keep the costs of our camps and expeditions down. We’ve already earned £40 in the October to December quarter but hope to see this number increase as more shopping is done online at this time of year.

Report: Bag packing 2014

do a good turn every day.

At Christmas the shops can be very busy and shoppers become increasingly frazzled. We like to do our good turn by helping the Budgens shoppers pack their bags on the two Saturdays before Christmas. We were pleased that 11 of our Cubs were able to take part and a special mention to Lauren and Lily who both did double shifts.

  • Saturday 13 Dec, 10 to 11.30 – Lily, Aiden, Adam P, Lauren
  • Saturday 13 Dec, 11.30 to 1 – Jim, Ethan, Lily
  • Saturday 20 Dec, 10 to 11.30 – Grace, Craig, Lauren, Olivia
  • Saturday 20 Dec, 11.30 to 1 – Isabella, Alex

Although this is not about raising money, we do have collection buckets for donations.

This year we collected £237 in week 1 and £210 in week 2 – making a grand total of £447. Our total was a little down on previous years because we only packed at the rear checkouts, thus missing the shoppers at the front of the store. The money we raise stays with Parbrook Cubs where we use it to subsidise our subs and camps, reducing the costs that you have to pay. Those that were able to help us will get a thank you from us in the form of a Subs discount in January.

We’re grateful to Budgens for continuing to let us help out their customers at Christmas. Thank you to all the shoppers who donated and well done to all our bag packers and helpers. All the Cubs that attended got extra points for the December points competition and it also counts towards their Promise challenge.

Although this is not about raising money, we do have collection buckets for donations and last year collected over £520. The money we raise stays with Parbrook Cubs where we use it to subsidise our subs and camps, reducing the costs that you have to pay.

Because we cannot cope with all our Cubs at one time we have split them up by six. We have also divided each day into 2 sessions although Cubs can swap between the groups and can arrange to do both sessions if they particularly want to.

When: Saturday 13 and 20 December, 10am to 1pm

Where: Budgens supermarket, Billingshurst. Meet us at the rear checkouts

Who: We hope that all our Cubs will be able to take part but we cannot cope with them all at once. We’ve divided each week into two sessions and have allocated a six to each of them. However, you can do the session that is most convenient to you as long as we get all of them covered. We need 4 Cubs per session. Let us know by returning the reply form. It’s all online – no paperwork required.

Adults: Raksha and Jacala will be manning the checkouts on both days but we would welcome an additional adult to help out in each session if it gets busy

Wear: You should wear your uniform. If you have a Christmas hat then you can wear that too.

Points: All the Cubs that help out in our bag packing sessions will earn points for their six which will go towards our December points competition.
