After such a long period of wet and cold weather we are hoping that things will improve as we start the Summer Term. As usual we have a packed programme of activities to enjoy on a Tuesday evening. You can download your copy from http://www.1stbillingshurst.org.uk/parbrook/prog.pdf. We are hoping to be outside on the field as much as we can so don’t forget to bring your water bottles if you think that you might need them. Do make sure that they have a name on and try to remember to take them home again at the end of the evening as we always seem to have some left.
St Georges Day Parade
With St George being the patron saint of Scouting we always celebrate his day which is of course 23 April. This year the District has decided to do something a bit different so we have been invited to attend an event at Parham House near Storrington. After a short service and the important renewal of the Promises there will be an afternoon of activities to try out. Pop along to the website for more details – https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/event-stg18/ and don’t forget to let us know if you plan to attend by registering through My Scout.
Jamboree on the trail
Each year, on the second Saturday in May, Scouts from across the world are invited to take part in a hike as part of the international Jamboree on the trail. This will be the sixth year that we have taken part and our event will follow the usual format. We invite Cubs and their families (and well behaved dogs) to join us for a walk in the South Downs on Saturday 12 May. We will start from Whiteways Car Park and then follow the Monarch’s Way and the South Downs Way on a circular walk. We will have more details online shortly and you will can register through My Scout. There is no charge for taking part and everybody can earn a commemorative Jamboree on the Trail 2018 blanket badge
Our camp this term will be at Nowhurst which is near Broadbridge Heath. We will be sleeping in tents on the weekend of 9-11 June. Despite just being 15 minutes away it is a secluded spot that we always enjoy visiting. We already have 13 names on our guest list but there is plenty of room for more. You can find details at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2018/02/04/nowhurst18/ and register through My Scout. Don’t forget that the camp fees are due before camp.
We have been delighted with the response to Summer Camp at Downe which takes place from Sunday 12 to Saturday 18 August. The number of campers we can take is restricted by the size of groups that the campsite will take for activities. We have now filled the 12 places that we have available. Details are on the website at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2018/02/11/event-downe18/ and camp fees should be paid before camp.
Weekend camp at Stedham
Our final tent camp of the year will be at Stedham near Midhurst in the South Downs. We will have more information about this camp online nearer the time but you can register via My Scout if you would like to reserve a place. Camp will take place over the weekend of 21-23 September
Come and help us at our camps
We are always looking for more adult helpers at our camps – to transport gear, help with the tent pitching, help in the kitchen or with activities. We now ask you what you can do to help us when you book your Cub a place – so be prepared to give an answer. If you have access to a van that can transport our gear or are a demon camp fire builder then we want to have you along. We are particularly short of helpers to assist Marian in the kitchen. Even an extra pair of hands on the last day to help clear up the site is welcome. We have jobs to suit all time commitments – you don’t even have to camp as you can visit for the day. Have a look at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/join-us/#adults for a bit more detail and have a chat with a leader if you would like to know more or have any questions.
The annual parade and show takes place on Sunday 24 June. With some of our leaders away that weekend we are looking for a couple of parents to volunteer to coordinate our involvement. We have a place in the parade if we want it but, as we have seen in recent years, it is very hard to find anybody that has a vehicle that we can use. This means that if we are going to take part at all then we will be walking which reduces options. We also need to run a stall on the field in the afternoon and have been given a target of raising at least £50. If you would be able to help us run our part of the show or have any ideas please let me know. Without parent help we will not be able to take part in the parade.
We are grateful to all of you that support our Easyfundraising when you shop online. With the donation reminder toolbar all you have to do is click to confirm that you’d like us to receive a donation when you shop at a participating site. We have now received the final payment for 2017 and raised just over £250. This is a bit down when compared to last year but still allows us to subsidise our camps and trips. If you don’t already support us then pop along to https://parbrook.wordpress.com/fundraising/ to find out more and sign up at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/parbrookcubs/. So easy, why not?
Don’t forget to let us know if you can help with our camps or the Billingshurst Show
