Welcome to the Summer term 2017

Hello everyone and we hope you all enjoyed the Easter Break and are looking forward to the summer term.

We’ve got lots of fun things lined up for this summer and so we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday for an evening of fun and games.

Many thanks, Akela

St George’s Day parade
Well done to everybody that came along to the St George’s Day parade and picnic. We had 20 Cubs in the parade and the District Commissioner said that we all looked very smart. We’ve got some photos of the event but if you have any good ones that we can include in our report then please e-mail them to Jacala.
A particular mention for James who carried the flag for us. We were a bit worried that it might be too heavy, especially in the gusty winds but he managed it very well.

So what else do we have in store for you this term?

Programme for this term
Towards the end of last term we held a pack forum where we asked each six to come up with ideas for our programme. It is what Scout HQ call “youth shaped Scouting”. We’ve tried to include their ideas in the programme for the term. We hope that you like it. Note that two of our evenings in June will be held on a Wednesday rather than a Tuesday. We’re popping down to Ashington Scouts for a rafting evening and challenging Dauxwood Cubs to a rounders match at their pack meeting. In return the Dauxwood Cubs will be visiting us in July and will also be coming on Jamboree on the Trail.

Jamboree on the trail
Jamboree on the trail is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike together. All Scouts, whatever their age and wherever they may be in the world, are invited to participate in whatever way they can. In their own way, everyone will be hiking in the same direction; towards a better future through Scouting. Jamboree on the trail (JOTT) takes place on the second Saturday in May. This is its 20th year and each year more people take part.
Sometimes we can forget how lucky we are to live in such a lovely part of the world so we thought it would be nice to have a family day out – no sponsor forms or restrictions, just a nice walk with great views.
So we will again be meeting at Whiteways for a circular walk in the South Downs on the afternoon of Saturday 13 May. All the details are at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2017/02/25/event-jott2017/.  You can book your place via the events tab on My Scout and we have invited the Cubs from Dauxwood to join us too. In addition to increasing your hikes away score everybody that takes part can get a special JOTT20 badge for their camp blanket.

Camps
It is camping season again. This summer we are offering you the chance to camp in tents for a total of 10 nights at our camps in June, August and September. We hope that you will want to join us. Before we get onto the details of each one we have an annual appeal for help to get our gear to camp. If anybody has access to a van that can be used then we would be very pleased to hear from you. Summer camp has the most gear as we have to take it all from tables and benches to gas bottles. Our other camps involve less kit but still have the sort of things that people are not so keen on having in their cars. If you can help then please speak to one of the leaders.
We also always need helpers at camp – either to help put things up and take things down at the start and end of camp, to help in the kitchen or to help with activities. Adults that camp with us need to have the usual Scouting DBS check which takes a few weeks to sort out so please let us know in plenty of time.

Gold rush camp at Nowhurst
Our first camp of the term is just up the road at Nowhurst near Broadbridge Heath. We’ve heard that there is gold in them there hills and so thought we had better go an explore. All the details are at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2017/03/14/event-nowhurst17/ and we already have 16 Cubs on the guest list. You can book your place via the events tab on My Scout.

Orient Express summer camp
Summer Camp is our main camp of the year – a chance to get away for more than just a weekend. This year our theme is the Orient Express so we’ll be taking a journey through Europe with a new country to explore each day – all without leaving the campsite. We will be camping at Blackland Farm near East Grinstead. All the details are at https://parbrook.wordpress.com/2017/03/15/event-summer17/. We’re hoping to have a few more names for this camp as we currently only have 4 who want to camp all week (Sun to Sat) and an additional 2 for the mini-camp which runs from Sunday to Wednesday. Hopefully when you have camped with us at Nowhurst you’ll want to do more and the numbers will increase.

Weekend camp at Stedham
We haven’t yet opened our September tent camp for booking but you can see the dates in our calendar and in the events tab of My Scout. Make a note of the weekend (Fri 29 Sep to Sun 1 Oct) and we’ll let you know when you can book.

Easyfundraising
We’re pleased to have recently received the latest donation to our funds from Easyfundraising. Thanks to all of you that remember to click through from https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/parbrookcubs/ when you shop online we received a very nice £127 for the October to December 2016 quarter. This takes the total raised this way to an amazing £506 for the whole year and in addition the gift aid raised £95 for Billingshurst Scout and Guide funds. It really is easy to raise money for us when you shop online – that’s why we call it painless fundraising. See https://parbrook.wordpress.com/fundraising/ for more details and remember that the money we raise is kept by Parbrook Cubs and used to reduce the costs of camps and expeditions – just look for “Parbrook Cashback” to see where it has saved you money.

Get our dates in your calendar
Our weekly programme is available as a .ics link that you can paste into your online calendar such as google. There is a separate link for camps and group events. The links and some instructions are given on the home page of the website – https://parbrook.wordpress.com/.
Of course if you prefer the good old paper version then we can provide that too – just download it from http://www.1stbillingshurst.org.uk/parbrook/prog.pdf
