Joining: Sailing taster, Sat 16 July

Back in April we filled our places for the sailing taster day on 16 July very quickly. The event is almost here and the organisers have sent us the joining instructions. As this event is not being organised by Parbrook Cubs there is a different consent form which you must complete and bring with you on the day.

What: West Sussex Scouts in partnership with Weir Wood Sailing club are running taster sessions for Cub Scouts at Weir wood Reservoir. The sessions will be run by an authorised Scout Instructor and assisted by RYA Dinghy instructors based at the club. After a bit of theory on dry land you’ll pair up in Optimist dingys and sail on the reservoir for the rest of the session.

Where: You will need to arrange your own transport. The Club is located a few miles south of East Grinstead, just off the A22 at Forest Row. A map and directions can be found on the Club website. The postcode is RH18 5HT and the route via the M23, A264 and then A22 seems to be fastest. Once in Forest Row turn right into Priory Road at the mini roundabout by the church. Continue along until you come to Michael Hall School on the left. Look out for Southern Water and sailing club signs directing you to tunr right. Go along this narrow lane until you cross a bridge over a stream and come to a road junction. There is another sailing club sign here to direct you on the right fork. In due course you will pass through some white gates at the entrance to the reservoir. Continue to follow sailing club signs which should take you left through woodland to the large club house car park.

When: In order that we can start on time, you should aim to be at the club house by 9:15am. Changing rooms are located within the club house, which is just beyond the car park. Once changed we will walk together down to “Oppy Bay” at the far end of the site (about 5 minutes walk from the club house) where the sessions will be run. We aim to be ready for collection at the Club house by 1pm.
Should you arrive before any of the Parbrook leaders then Tim Taylor from West Sussex Scouts is our contact on site.

Wear: The club will provide a safety helmet and buoyancy aid. Please ensure that each Cub Scout has a change of clothing to wear to the session. You should arrive wearing your uniform top and scarf. Once on site you will need to get changed into your activity gear. There is a good chance that you will get wet, so the organisers recommend that each sailor changes into warm clothing such as tracksuit bottoms, an old pair of trainers, a sweatshirt or windproof top and brings a towel. Jeans, wellington boots or crocs are not suitable.
Please also make sure that Cubs are suitably covered in suntan lotion and supplied with a drink (a water bottle is ideal).
At the end of the session you will be able to change back into your uniform to travel home. Don’t forget to pack a spare set of underwear in case yours gets wet during the session.

Cost: The cost is £15 per person which we reduced to £13 using our Parbrook Cashback. Everybody paid at the time of booking.

Badge: You will gain a time on the water credit towards that staged badge and also stage 1 of the nautical skills staged badge. It will also be a new sport for your Skills challenge. In addition, each Cub will receive a taster sailing certificate on completion of session.

Who: This is a West Sussex Scouts event and will include some Cubs from other groups. We have 14 Cubs on this trip:

  • Abi
  • Aiden
  • Ellie
  • Emily
  • Finley W
  • Isabella
  • Jasmine
  • Joshua
  • Kinley
  • Max
  • Poppy
  • Robin
  • Thomas
  • William

Paperwork: You must complete a “permission and consent” form and bring it with you on the day. This will be given to the organisers of the event.
Scouting water activity rules require us to ask that you can swim 50m and you made that declaration when you booked. All Cubs will have buoyancy aids and the instructors will be close by so really you need to be sure that you will be confident in the water, in the unlikely event that you do fall in. Any medication condition must be notified to the instructors on the permission and consent form prior the activity.
Note that the form requires a parent or elected representative to remain on site during the session. Parbrook leaders will act as your representatives for this.

During the event: Subject to a satisfactory mobile phone signal we hope to be able to post pictures via our Instagram account.

After the event: The session is intended to be a taster. If after the session the Cub Scouts wish to continue sailing, Weir Wood Sailing Club is open to new members and offers a range of training and sailing opportunities for all ages. More details can be found at http://www.wwsc.org.uk
